A tree on a car is a vehicle scene first, not a yard-cleanup job. Keep people away from the wood, the glass, and anything the tree is still holding. If a line is involved, stay back and treat it as energized.
If people are hurt or trapped, call 911. If a line is down or touching the car, call 911 and SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 from a safe place. Don’t walk closer for photos. SDG&E decides whether lines can be de-energized, covered, or moved.
Branch Pro San Diego is a referral service. We connect you with licensed, insured independent local tree professionals. You hire and pay the professional directly. We don’t cut trees, tow cars, or file insurance claims.
This page is for a tree on a vehicle. For a tree through a roof or wall, use the emergency fallen-tree guide.
What should you do in the first minutes?
Move people and pets off the driveway and out of the drop zone. A limb that looks still can still be loaded. Don’t sit in the car, don’t start the engine, and don’t try to drive out from under wood.
Don’t pull the tree with a truck, a winch, or a tow strap. That can roll the car, snap the wood, or drop a second piece. Don’t climb onto the hood or the trunk to “see if it will lift.”
If the car is in the street, keep bystanders back. A Mira Mesa cul-de-sac and a Pacific Beach alley have different traffic, but the rule is the same: nobody stands under hung-up wood.
When do 911 and SDG&E come before a tree crew?
Call 911 when someone is injured, trapped, or facing an immediate threat. Tell the dispatcher that a tree struck a vehicle, and whether a line is involved.
Call SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 whenever a line is down, draped, sparking, or even touching the car without obvious damage. A private tree quote does not replace that report. A matched crew cannot declare utility equipment safe.
If the tree is only on private pavement, with no injury and no utility contact, emergency services may not need to stay. You still stay out of the loaded wood until a qualified professional looks at it.
How do you document the car without getting closer?
Photograph from where you already stand safely. Wide shots of the whole tree, the car, the house, and any line or fence in the picture. Don’t crawl under the canopy for a close-up of the roof or the windshield.
Write down:
- Approximate time it fell
- Weather (Santa Ana wind, rain, no wind)
- Whether the tree was already dead, leaning, or recently cut
- Who owns the tree, if you know
- License plate and VIN only if you can read them from a safe place
Don’t move the car to “save the paint.” Movement can change how the wood is sitting.
Who removes a tree from a car in San Diego?
Removing wood from a vehicle is tree work plus a towing and insurance problem. The tree company does not automatically tow the car. The tow company does not automatically cut the tree.
Ask the matched professional to describe the sequence in writing: stabilize or cut the wood, protect the car as far as the wood work allows, then release the vehicle to a tow if the insurer or you request one. Confirm whether the tree is a City of San Diego street tree or a private-yard tree before anyone cuts. A City street tree is not a DIY or private-crew decision. Use Get It Done for a city-maintained street tree, and see tree removal permits.
For paid tree work, ask for the contractor license that matches the scope. Look it up on the CSLB license lookup. An active C-49 Tree and Palm license or an active legacy D-49 can both be valid. California’s current minor-work threshold is an aggregate price under $1,000, with extra conditions.
Does insurance pay, and who files?
We don’t quote coverage. Read the actual policy, or call the insurer listed on the card in the glove box if you can reach it without going under the tree. Comprehensive coverage on the vehicle is a common place people look. Homeowners or renters coverage can be a different contract if the tree started on the house side. None of that is a promise that a given policy pays.
Ask the insurer, in writing, whether they want the car left in place for an adjuster, and whether they have a preferred tow. Don’t invent a dollar figure for “typical” claims. A Chula Vista compact and an Escondido truck are different losses.
If the tree started on a neighbor’s lot, that is a civil question. It is not a reason to cut their tree without authority. See neighbor tree and property-line rules.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start the car and drive out from under the tree?
No. Starting or rolling the car can shift loaded wood. Wait until the wood is off or the scene is released.
Should I call a tow before a tree company?
If a line is involved, call 911 and SDG&E first. For a private driveway with no utilities, the wood usually has to come off before a tow can move the car safely. Ask both the insurer and the tree professional which order they want.
Is a tree on a car the same as a tree on a house?
No. A house scene can hide unstable framing and interior wiring. A car scene is a vehicle, glass, fluids, and often a street. Use this page for the car. Use the fallen-tree guide for a structure.
Can Branch Pro tell me if the car is totaled?
No. The independent professional inspects the tree work. An insurer or a body shop speaks to the vehicle. We don’t appraise cars.
