A hung-up limb is wood that broke and did not hit the ground. It is still a loaded object in the canopy. People call it a widowmaker because it can fall later, in a lighter wind than the one that broke it.

This page is that suspended-limb task. A cracked limb that is still attached is cracked tree limbs. A whole tree on a house or a car is the emergency fallen-tree guide or tree on a car.

Branch Pro San Diego is a referral service. We connect you with licensed, insured independent local tree professionals. You hire and pay the professional directly. We don’t climb, cut, or pull hung wood.

Stay out of the drop zone. Don’t walk under it for a photo. Don’t pull it with a truck, a winch, or a rope from the ground. Wood under tension can shift without warning.

What should you do in the first minutes?

Move people and pets on a path that does not pass under the hung wood. Close the patio, the walk, or the stall it can hit.

If anyone is hurt, call 911. If the limb is on or toward a line, stay back and call 911 and SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 from a place that is already safe. SDG&E decides whether lines can be de-energized, covered, or moved. A private climber does not make that call.

A Santa Ana night in East County and a wet winter blow in Point Loma can both hang wood. The species and the target change the job. The first rule does not: stay out from under it.

Why not pull it down yourself?

A hung limb is often still attached by a strip of wood or pinned by other branches. Pulling from a vehicle can:

  • Whip the piece into a new target
  • Bring down a second limb
  • Load the remaining tree until it fails
  • Pull you into the drop zone if the rope or chain lets go

That is not a DIY “just get it down before it rains” job. A licensed climber or a crane plan starts from an already-safe position. See when a crane helps.

Don’t enter a damaged structure until emergency officials say it is safe. Photograph only from an approved area.

What belongs in a written scope?

Ask the independent professional for a written scope that separates:

  • Making the hung piece safe versus taking more of the tree
  • Climbing, aerial device, or crane
  • What happens to the remaining cracked unions
  • Line clearance if SDG&E is still in the picture
  • Hauling as a separate line if you only needed the hazard down tonight

For paid tree work, look up the license on the CSLB license lookup. An active C-49 Tree and Palm license or an active legacy D-49 can both be valid. California’s current minor-work threshold is an aggregate price under $1,000, with extra conditions. After-hours emergency work is still licensed work.

Frequently asked questions

Will it definitely fall in the next wind?

Nobody on a phone call can promise that. Treat it as loaded until a professional makes it safe.

Can I cut the hanging end with a pole saw from the ground?

Don’t. You cannot see how it is pinned, and a partial cut can drop it or the piece you are standing under.

Is this the same as a cracked limb that has not split off?

No. A cracked but attached limb is a different page. A hung piece is already failed and still in the air.

Can Branch Pro send someone to pull it with a truck?

No. The independent professional inspects from a safe position, explains the method, and contracts with you. Vehicle-pulling is not the plan.
