Defensible space is a layout around your house, not a countywide checklist. Treat Zone 1 as the area within 30 feet, or to a closer property line. The first five feet is Zone 0 ember-resistant guidance. Zone 2 runs 30 to 100 feet, or to a closer property line. Confirm current requirements for your parcel with the fire authority. Do that before you clear native vegetation or large trees.
Prune small branches the right way
Small, reachable branches can be cut from stable ground with hand pruners if you cut outside the branch collar. A flush cut invites decay. Topping and lion-tailing strip foliage the tree needs. Read pest and disease clues on your trees

- Dead or hanging branches sit over a roof, walkway, or wires
Dead wood can fail without a storm. Do not climb or cut it from a ladder. If a standing tree is approaching a line, stay back and call SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343. If a line is down, call 911 and SDG&E from a safe place. Otherwise connect with a licensed crew.
- Mushroom-like conks are growing at the base of the trunk
Fruiting bodies can mark internal decay. They do not measure how much sound wood is left. Photograph them from a safe distance. Have a licensed tree pro assess any nearby targets.
- Fresh cracks or mounding in the soil around the root plate

- A bee, wasp, or hornet nest is in the tree you need worked
