Mexican fan palm is Washingtonia robusta. It is the tall, tapered-trunk fan palm along a lot of San Diego sidewalks. Trimming it is a skirt, fruit, and clearance job. It is not the same as cleaning a Canary Island date or cutting a queen palm.

The USDA identification profile describes a tapered trunk under a dense crown of bright to olive-green fan leaves. Retained dead leaves can form a skirt. That skirt is not, by itself, a reason to skin the trunk.

Branch Pro San Diego is a referral service. We connect you with licensed, insured independent local tree professionals. You hire and pay the professional directly. We don’t climb palms.

If you are still identifying the palm, start with types of San Diego palms. If the question is clean versus trim, see palm cleaning vs trimming.

What is actually being trimmed?

A typical Mexican fan palm scope is some mix of:

  • Dead hanging fronds over a sidewalk, car, or roof
  • Flower and fruit stalks that drop on pavement
  • A skirt that has become a rodent, ember, or clearance problem
  • Clearance from a building or a conductor, which is a utility question first

Live green fronds are the palm’s food. Removing them for a “pineapple” or “hurricane” look is appearance, not care. Over-trimming is a common reason these palms look stressed after a cheap climb.

A City of San Diego street palm between sidewalk and curb is not a private-yard palm. The City’s street-tree maintenance program uses a no-fee permit after City inspection. Use Get It Done. A private crew cannot self-authorize a City palm.

A private Mexican fan in Chula Vista and a City palm in North Park need that ownership check before anyone sets a spike.

How is this different from the native fan palm?

California fan palm is Washingtonia filifera. Calscape treats it as the only palm native to the western United States. It has a thicker, more columnar trunk and a more open gray-green crown. See are palm trees native to California.

Hybrids exist. Photograph the whole trunk and crown. Don’t assume every skirted fan on a San Diego street is robusta.

South American palm weevil is established in the county and is killing Canary Island date palms, not as the headline pest of Mexican fan. If the palm is a Canary Island date, switch to the weevil page.

When should a professional climb?

Call when fronds hang over a target, when fruit is a slip problem on a walk, or when the skirt is against a structure in a fire-hazard area. Don’t use a household ladder on a tall palm. Don’t skin the trunk from a roof.

If the palm already touches a line, stay away. Call 911 and SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343. SDG&E decides whether lines can be de-energized, covered, or moved.

Ask for a written scope that names live versus dead fronds, fruit stalks, and whether anyone proposes to take green leaves. Palm tree service is how you request that referral. How to prune a palm covers the broader palm set.

For paid tree work, look up the license on the CSLB license lookup. An active C-49 Tree and Palm license or an active legacy D-49 can both be valid. California’s current minor-work threshold is an aggregate price under $1,000, with extra conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to remove the skirt every year?

No. A skirt is a condition. Assess targets, fire rules, pests, and access. There is no one San Diego calendar that fits every Washingtonia.

Is hurricane cutting a valid trim?

It is an appearance cut that removes live fronds the palm still uses. Ask why any green leaf is coming off.

Can I trim a City Mexican fan palm myself?

Not if it is a City street tree. Get City inspection and the no-fee permit path first.

Can Branch Pro quote a per-palm price on the phone?

No. The independent professional inspects access, height, and debris, then contracts with you. We don’t set prices.

If the palm is on a conductor, use the utility steps first. For a private Mexican fan that needs a climb, call (858) 400-4423. We’ll connect you with a licensed, insured independent local professional. Describe the height, the targets under the crown, and whether it sits in the parkway. You hire and pay that professional directly.
