Italian cypress browning in San Diego is usually a pattern question: one flagging limb, the whole top, or a dusty bronze from the inside out. UC IPM’s cypress page lists spider mites, bark beetles, cypress tipminer, canker diseases, Phytophthora root and crown rot, and water deficit or excess among the real causes. A spray does not sort that list.
Branch Pro San Diego is a referral service. We connect you with licensed, insured independent local tree professionals. You hire and pay the professional directly. We don’t diagnose, treat, or remove trees.
Stay on the ground. Don’t strip bark to “find the canker.”
What pattern are you actually seeing?
Write down where the brown started and how fast it moved.
- Individual branches browning while the rest stays green can point toward a canker or a mechanical injury. UC lists canker diseases on cypress.
- Interior bronze with fine webbing on dry, dusty foliage is a mite-style clue. UC lists spider mites.
- Tip dieback on many shoots can be tipminer or blight. UC lists cypress tipminer and needle blight.
- Whole-plant collapse with wet soil against the flare is a root-and-water question. UC lists Phytophthora and water deficit or excess. Cypress wants little water once established.
A tight screen along an El Cajon driveway bakes differently from a coastal Encinitas hedge in marine layer. Overwater from lawn spray hitting the trunks is a common inland setup. That still is not a home diagnosis.
Lemon cypress sold as a shrub is a different plant and a different job. This page is the tall Cupressus screen.
What should you check before anyone treats?
Look from the ground at:
- Soil moisture at the drip line, not just the lawn clock
- Spray heads wetting the trunks
- Recent shearing or stub cuts
- Pitch, sunken bark, or a single dead leader
- Whether neighboring Leyland or Monterey cypress show the same pattern
Don’t start with a fertilizer or a “systemic for evergreens.” Excess vigor and wet trunks can make some problems worse. Don’t compost obviously diseased wood if a professional later names a canker. Ask how that wood should be handled.
If the screen sits on a property line, confirm who owns which trunks before anyone cuts. See neighbor tree law.
When is removal on the table?
Removal is a conversation when most of the canopy is brown, the leader is dead, or the tree is a target over a driveway or a roof. A single flagged limb can be a pruning question after identification, not an automatic takedown of a whole screen.
Tree health diagnosis is how you request identification. Tree removal is a separate scope if the tree is done. Stump grinding is separate again if you are replanting a different species.
For paid tree work, look up the license on the CSLB license lookup. An active C-49 Tree and Palm license or an active legacy D-49 can both be valid. California’s current minor-work threshold is an aggregate price under $1,000, with extra conditions. A pesticide application can require its own license.
Frequently asked questions
Will more water green it back up?
Not if the cause is canker, mites, or root rot. UC lists water deficit and excess as separate disorders. Check actual soil moisture.
Is one brown branch a reason to remove the whole screen?
No. Map the pattern first. A single flag can be pruned after identification. A dead leader or a mostly brown canopy is a different case.
Can I spray horticultural oil myself?
Don’t treat until the pest is identified. Oils and insecticides can miss canker and root rot entirely, and they can disrupt other insects.
Can Branch Pro name the disease from a phone photo?
No. The independent professional inspects the tree, explains options, and contracts with you.
