What is a hedge job, and how does it differ from tree trimming?

A hedge is a maintained shrub row or screen. Tree trimming is a canopy job on a shade tree. Those two jobs use different plants and different cuts.

The ISA pruning brochure for mature trees still applies to shade trees. No branch should be removed without a reason. Hedge shearing isn’t that same shade-tree pruning method. It’s clipping a shrub face to a line.

Formal even face vs cuts at nodes

UC IPM thrips guidance describes shearing as clipping dense foliage to keep an even surface. That’s the look of a formal hedge or topiary. The other method cuts just above branch crotches and nodes. That method doesn’t shear the terminals off the plant.

UC IPM says to avoid shearing plants for that even face. Shearing also stimulates thrips-susceptible new growth on the plant. UC IPM psyllid guidance says to minimize shearing or clipping of terminals. That shearing stimulates new growth preferred by psyllids.

Neither method is always better for every row. The written scope should name which face you want. A sheared even face is one named job. Cuts at nodes are a different named job.

Eugenia and the coastal UC exception

UC IPM names a shearing exception for eugenia. Eugenia, Syzygium paniculatum, and some other shrubs get sheared several times each year. That’s for a smooth dense canopy, as in formal hedging or topiary. Well-timed shearing can suppress the eugenia psyllid on those shrubs.

Regular shearing of eugenia terminals reduces eugenia psyllid abundance. It’s the only way to eliminate pitted foliage besides waiting. You can also wait for those old leaves to drop. No pesticide restores foliage that is already pitted.

Leave eugenia clippings as mulch near the shrubs for at least 3 weeks. That wait lets parasites in the nymphs emerge. In coastal cooler areas, parasite populations may not increase quickly enough in spring.

This eugenia note is a pest exception from UC. It isn’t a countywide shearing schedule for every hedge.

What should a written hedge quote name?

A usable hedge quote names the plants and the face. “Trim the hedge” isn’t a written specification for the crew.

Ask for these items in plain English, on paper, before anyone cuts.

  • Name the species if it’s known, and where the row sits.
  • Name the target height and width you want in writing.
  • A neighbor concern belongs in that same written target.
  • This page doesn’t set a legal height cap.
  • Say whether the crew can work both sides of the row.
  • Say whether the face is sheared even or cut to nodes.
  • Name debris handling before anyone starts the visit.
  • Leave eugenia clippings as mulch near the shrubs for at least 3 weeks.
  • City, HOA, and right-of-way plants need a separate approval.

Don’t treat a private-yard quote as that approval. San Marcos Public Works accepts removal applications for city trees. The city also covers hedges and large shrubs on public property. Rights-of-way plants use that same city application path. Confirm ownership before anyone cuts a street-side row.

What if the hedge is near a line, or someone is in danger?

Call 911 if someone is injured or a hedge is an immediate threat to life. If a standing plant conflicts with a power line, stop. Call SDG&E before any private hedge trimming conversation. If a line is down, stay away from it. Call 911 and SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 from a safe place. Don’t trim the hedge into any electrical conductors. Nobody on a private hedge job should measure wires. A contractor license isn’t line-clearance qualification for this work.
