Root rot is the most common killer

Phytophthora cinnamomi is a soil-borne fungus and it’s the number-one cause of avocado decline across San Diego County. It attacks the fine feeder roots first, so the tree can’t take up water even when the soil is wet. That’s the confusing part for a lot of homeowners: the canopy looks thirsty, so people water more, and that makes the root rot worse.

What root rot looks like

Sparse, pale green or yellowish canopy. Small, undersized leaves. Branch dieback starting at the top or outer edges of the canopy. Fruit that’s smaller than normal, or a tree that fruits heavily one year and then crashes. In advanced cases you’ll see bark cankers near the soil line, sometimes with a dark, wet-looking stain.

Root rot thrives in soil that stays wet and doesn’t drain well, which describes a lot of the heavy clay soil found across inland San Diego. Pests worth ruling out

Persea mite is the pest most commonly tied to avocado decline in Southern California. Stressed but savable, or too far gone

Correct the irrigation, pull mulch back from the trunk while keeping a generous ring out to the drip line, and get a phosphonate treatment on the calendar if root rot is confirmed.
