An avocado that looks like it is dying can show wet wilt, dry scorch, salt tip burn, or dieback in the top. Those patterns overlap. The next check is the pattern on the tree plus soil moisture and drainage, not a photo diagnosis and not a first round of pruning.

What patterns should you compare before you change watering or pruning?
Compare four patterns from already-safe ground: wet wilt, dry scorch, tip burn, and dieback in the top. One brown leaf is not a diagnosis. UC IPM notes that too little water and too much water can produce similar foliar decline. Saturated soil starves roots of oxygen and can block uptake. A wilted avocado is not an automatic cue to water more.

Photograph the whole canopy from outside the fall zone. Use zoom for a typical leaf, the trunk flare, and any standing water. Don’t climb. Don’t walk under hanging wood for a closeup.

What does Phytophthora root rot look like on avocado?
UC IPM’s Phytophthora root rot page describes small, pale green or yellowish leaves, wilt, brown necrotic tips, sparse foliage, little new growth, little leaf litter, and dieback in the top that exposes bark and fruit to sunburn. Fruit production declines, but trees may still set a heavy crop of small fruit. Those canopy signs are not a remote diagnosis.
The causal agent is Phytophthora cinnamomi. UC notes that Phytophthora species are not true fungi. It thrives in excess moisture and poor drainage. Trees of any size or age can be affected.
When the disease is advanced, feeder roots are scarce. Remaining small roots are black, brittle, and dead. Foliage can stay wilted even when the soil is wet.
The California Avocado Commission says Phytophthora cinnamomi attacks feeder roots and can result in death. Definitive control measures have not been found. Integrated management can reduce impact. UC is clear that treatments do not eradicate the pathogen. Do not buy a spray from a photo of brown tips.
The pathogen spreads on nursery stock, equipment, shoes, fruit that sat on infested soil, and any move of moist soil. Don’t work wet avocado soil as a home experiment, and don’t move that soil to another bed. A backyard tree in Encinitas and a grove tree in Valley Center can show the same foliar signs. The soil moisture and drainage still have to be checked on that lot.
How do drainage and planting depth change the risk?
UC’s avocado cultural tips say avocados need fairly good drainage, with no hardpan or rock within 3 feet of the surface. Standing water or poor drainage may lead to root rots. That is a site check, not a neighborhood rule. A Fallbrook hillside and a Chula Vista backyard basin can drain differently after the same irrigation cycle.
Plant at the same depth as the container. Too deep lets soil or water stand against the trunk and promotes Phytophthora. Too high dries the roots. UC’s planting window is after the last spring frost and before hot weather. Guatemalan-race avocados can be injured around 27-30 F. Mexican types can be injured around 24-26 F. Cold injury depends on duration, prior weather, exposure, fruit maturity, and variety. That is not a San Diego neighborhood frost map.
Overwatering predisposes an avocado to root and crown rots. Underwatering can produce small fruit that tends to sunburn. Check the actual root zone, not the calendar. A shared lawn sprinkler can keep avocado roots wet for years, then leave them dry when the turf program changes.
How is salt tip burn different from root rot?
Salt tip burn is a leaf-margin pattern that can look like drought, and it is not the same as wilt on wet soil from root rot. UC’s salinity page describes leaf-tip and margin browning from spray, saline irrigation, or salty soil. Symptoms similar to salt damage can also come from water deficit. Soil or irrigation-water tests answer the question. A coastal lot in La Jolla is not proof of salt damage.
Chloride in irrigation water is a known Southern California issue. Ask your water provider for its water-quality report before anyone treats. Don’t strip live salt-spotted foliage as a treatment. Don’t leach a poorly drained yard.
Root-rot wilt with wet soil is a different pattern from dry scorch or a neat tip burn on older leaves. They can still overlap. That overlap is why a photo is not a lab result.
When is this a pruning question, and when is it not?
Pruning answers a named cut: structure, clearance, a damaged limb, or planned size control. A thinning canopy, smaller leaves, or a heavy set of small fruit is a health question first. Don’t cut live wood to open the canopy when the top is already dying back. Newly exposed bark and fruit can sunburn. Extra live-wood removal is not a root-rot treatment.
If a large limb is failing toward a house, driveway, or play area, stay back. That is a safety call, not a DIY prune.
What should a professional assessment include?
Ask for a tree health diagnosis that starts with soil moisture, irrigation history, drainage, planting depth, and the actual canopy pattern. An arborist consultation is a separate scope you agree with the independent company. Supportive care, limited pruning, or removal should follow that assessment. Removal is not required after every decline.

Frequently asked questions
Can a declining avocado be saved?
It depends on the cause and how much live canopy and live roots remain. Irrigation and drainage problems are often adjustable. UC says treatments do not eradicate Phytophthora cinnamomi. No one can promise to save the tree from a photo.
Should I water more if the leaves are wilted?
Only after you know whether the root zone is wet or dry. Wilt with wet soil is a drainage and root question. Crispy leaves with dry soil are a watering-coverage question. Adding water to soggy ground can make root rot worse.
Does brown avocado leaf tips always mean root rot?
No. UC lists brown necrotic tips among Phytophthora signs, and salt, drought, and other stresses can brown tips too. The rest of the pattern, plus soil moisture, is what you record.
Should I prune a thinning avocado to help it recover?

How do I check salt without guessing?
Ask your water district for its water-quality results, and test soil or irrigation water if salt is the working theory. Don’t treat from a coastal ZIP code alone.
