Deep root fertilization in San Diego County

Deep root fertilization injects a nutrient solution directly into the root zone under pressure, usually eight to twelve inches down. That puts the nutrients where feeder roots actually take them up, below the compacted surface soil and the lawn that would otherwise grab a surface feeding first. The injection also loosens tight soil a little, which helps water and air reach the roots. It is most useful for stressed, poorly growing, or newly established trees.

Not every tree does, and feeding the wrong problem wastes money. A tree in decent soil with a full canopy usually does not need it. A tree with thin pale foliage, slow growth, or one growing in compacted urban fill is a better candidate. Sometimes the real issue is water or a soil problem, not nutrients. We check that first, because an honest diagnosis beats fertilizing a tree that is actually being overwatered.

For most established trees that need it, once a year is plenty, usually in fall or early spring. Newly planted and recovering trees can benefit from more frequent support while they establish. Over-fertilizing is a real thing and can push weak, disease-prone growth, so more is not better. We recommend a schedule based on the specific tree, its age, and its soil rather than a blanket plan.
