Defensible space is the buffer you keep between a structure and the trees, brush, and other fuel around it, so a wildfire has less to burn as it approaches. California law requires 100 feet of defensible space for homes in State Responsibility Areas and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. The space is split into zones by distance from the house, each with its own standard.
