Most South Bay neighborhoods are urban and lower fire-hazard, but the eastern edges near Otay and open space can fall in a hazard zone. Defensible space is the buffer you keep between a structure and the trees, brush, and other fuel around it, so a wildfire has less to burn as it approaches. California law requires 100 feet of defensible space for homes in State Responsibility Areas and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. The space is split into zones by distance from the house, each with its own standard. For trees, the work is usually limb-raising, canopy thinning, deadwood removal, and taking out ladder fuel that carries fire up into the crown.

Zone 0 is the ember-resistant zone, the first 0 to 5 feet closest to the structure, added to California defensible-space law by AB 3074. It is the strictest zone, meant to keep flammable material right against the home to a minimum, since wind-blown embers are what ignite most houses in a wildfire. For trees, that means keeping branches from overhanging the roof and eaves and removing woody fuel in that first five feet.
