How do I know if my palm has the weevil?

The signature sign is the center of the crown collapsing first. The newest fronds in the middle droop and die while the older outer fronds are still green, and eventually the whole top folds into an open umbrella. You may notice chewed frond bases, a fermenting smell, and fibrous frass near the crown. Canary Island date palms are the main target. Once the growing point is dead the palm cannot recover.

Early detection is the only real chance, and even then it is difficult. If the central growing point is already collapsing, the palm is past saving and needs removal, because a dead-crowned palm becomes a heavy, unstable hazard over time.
